International Credit Union Day is Thursday, October 15. Here's why the movement behind it still matters.
Your phone buzzes. A headline about rates. An ad for an app that promises to make you rich. A text saying your account is locked. (It isn't. Don't click it.)
Money comes with a lot of noise these days. Most of it is trying to sell you something. Some of it is trying to scare you. Very little of it is trying to help.
On Thursday, October 15, credit unions around the world mark the 78th International Credit Union Day. This year's theme is Cooperative Finance: A Steady Signal in a Noisy World.
That's the best description of a credit union we've heard in a while. Here's why.
Built by people the banks left out.
Credit unions started with a simple idea. People pool their money and lend it to each other at a fair price.
That idea came from working people. Farmers, factory workers, and neighbors who couldn't get a fair deal from the banks of their day. So they built something of their own.
Since 1948, credit unions have set aside the third Thursday in October to remember that history, share what they've done since, and hear from the members who make it all work.
The idea hasn't changed much, and that's kind of the point.
What keeps the signal steady?
A lot of the noise in finance comes from one place. Someone upstairs needs a bigger number next quarter. That pressure turns into new fees, pushier sales, and fine print nobody reads.
Credit unions are built differently. Here's what that looks like for us.
Nobody is chasing a quarterly number. We don't have shareholders or earnings calls. When the markets get jumpy, our job stays the same. Take care of the people who bank here.
Everyone gets the same say. Every member is an owner. Someone with $20 in savings has the same vote in our board elections as someone with $20,000. Try getting that at a big bank.
Your money stays close to home. Your deposits turn into loans for your neighbors. A first home down the street. A small business opening its doors. Financial education for kids at a local middle school.
Want the full picture? Here's what membership really means.
Not the loudest. Just the ones who show up.
Here's the honest part. We're not the flashiest option out there. We don't have a Super Bowl ad or an app that turns your savings into a video game.
What we have is people. People who pick up the phone when fraud hits your card. Who walk you through a loan without rushing you. Who tell you the truth, even when it's not the answer you hoped for.
That's what a steady signal looks like. It's not loud. It's just there when you need it.
And right now, a lot of people need it. Prices keep climbing. Scams keep getting smarter. Plenty of folks feel like the financial system wasn't built with them in mind.
Credit unions were built for exactly those people. That hasn't changed.
How to mark the day.
You don't need a parade. A few small things go a long way.
- Tell someone. Plenty of people have never heard what a credit union actually is. Your story might be the one that clicks.
- Use what's already yours. Free financial counseling comes with membership. Book a time to talk through a budget, a loan, or a goal.
- See where your money goes. Here's how member dollars are put to work around here.
- Vote in our next board election. It's your credit union. You get a say in who runs it.
Not a member yet? Join us. One account is all it takes to become an owner.
The world isn't getting any quieter, but we're not going anywhere either.
Happy International Credit Union Day!
