Courtesy Pay

Stay Protected: Opt in to Courtesy Pay

First Commonwealth FCU offers a Courtesy Pay service on our checking accounts for qualified members 18 and older. This service automatically pays overdrafts up to a preset limit. Each time you overdraw your checking account and Courtesy Pay covers your check or withdrawal, the credit union will charge the normal Non-Sufficient Funds Fee of $33 .

Because of this $33 fee, the Courtesy Pay service should not be used on a regular basis. There are other, less expensive, methods for making sure your checks or withdrawals get honored, including:

• Ensuring there are sufficient funds in your checking account at all times.

• Linking your checking account to a savings account, personal line of credit, home equity line or Visa® line for overdraft protection.

Courtesy Pay is available for checks, ACH transactions, pre-authorized automatic transfers and, if you have authorized us, ATM and everyday debit card transactions.

In addition, you may opt-out of the Courtesy Pay service at any time by calling our Contact Center at 610.821.2403 or 1.888.821.2400.

You must have your checking account back to a positive balance within 30 days from the time you first overdraw your account. A no interest re-payment plan is available to assist you in repaying fees and other amounts owed due to the use of Courtesy Pay. Ask for details.

Whether your overdrafts will be paid is discretionary and we reserve the right not to pay. For example, we typically do not pay overdrafts if your account is not in good standing, or you are not making regular deposits, or you have too many overdrafts.

Opt In to Courtesy Pay

Stay Protected: Opt in to Courtesy Pay

Why opt in?
First Commonwealth’s Courtesy Pay is designed with your protection and convenience in mind. The vast majority of our members do not overdraw their accounts and incur fees. However, life doesn’t always go according to plan, and overdrafts do occur. Without Courtesy Pay, your ATM and everyday debit/VISA CheckCard transactions may be declined if you attempt to make a transaction without sufficient funds.

When you open a new account, your ATM and everyday debit/Visa CheckCard transactions will not be protected under First Commonwealth’s Courtesy Pay unless you opt in.

You can always change your selection, but make your choice today and protect yourself from overdrafts.

Please Note: If you have more than one checking account, you will need to opt in for EACH account.

Opt in now in one of the following ways:

1. Call our Contact Center at 610.821.2403 to opt in by phone.

FAQs

Courtesy Pay FAQs

What is an Overdraft?
An overdraft occurs when you do not have enough available funds in your checking account to cover a transaction, but we pay it anyway. We can cover your overdrafts in two different ways:

  1. Courtesy Pay - A service where First Commonwealth pays your overdraft, allowing your balance to temporarily go negative.

  2. Overdraft Protection - A service that allows a checking account to be linked to another account to provide protection against returned items or overdrafts. Choices can include using a savings account or a line of credit to provide protection.

What if I already have Overdraft Protection?
If you already have Overdraft Protection on your account, such as a line of credit or automatic transfer from another account, First Commonwealth will access those funds first (with related fees, if applicable) before using Courtesy Pay and imposing the Courtesy Pay fee of $33 per transaction. How do I enroll in Courtesy Pay? If you qualify, Courtesy Pay is automatic for Check, ACH and Bill Pay Transactions. However you must opt in to have your ATM and Everyday Debit/Check Card Transactions covered.

You can opt-in to the Courtesy Pay program by:

1. Call our Contact Center at 610.821.2403 to opt in by phone.

2. Stop by any financial center to opt in in person.

(Please allow two to three business days for us to process your request.)

What are my Courtesy Pay options?
We do authorize and pay overdrafts for the following types of transactions:

  • Checks and other transactions made using your checking account number
  • Automatic bill payments

We will not authorize and pay overdrafts for the following types of transactions unless you ask us to:

  • ATM transactions
  • Everyday Debit/Check Card transactions

We pay overdrafts at our discretion, which means we do not guarantee that we will always authorize and pay any type of transaction. If we do not authorize and pay an overdraft, your transaction will be declined. If you do not make a selection, you will automatically be considered to have declined the service.

What fees will I be charged if First Commonwealth pays my overdraft?

Under Courtesy Pay:

  • We will charge you a fee of $33 each time we pay an overdraft.
  • You must have your checking account back to a positive balance within 30 days from the time you first overdraw your account.
  • There is no limit on the total fees we can charge you for overdrawing your account.

Can I change my Courtesy Pay options later?
You may, at any time, change your selection by calling or writing us. You may opt out at anytime. Please call our Contact Center at 610.821.2403, if you have any questions.
